the practical update.

This morning the doctor tapped Olive's head for 36 ml of fluid. She is talking about starting to do tapping more regularly...about every 4 days or so. Also her protein level in her CSF fluid continues to drop and was at 243 today (the goal is for it to get below 100).

Yesterday we were asked to consider moving Olive out of the ICU and either into a private room or into the well baby nursery. This was suggested as a way for us to save money as well since it is cheaper to move her to the nursery.

Today I was asking a NICU mother about her experience in the nursery for a few days last week and suggested not to go. She said her baby had a distended abdomen for a few days before they addressed it, and that there is a smaller amount of nurses caring for more babies.

The other option to moving her into a private room also has downfalls. If we move to a private room there would primarily be a first year resident and third year resident caring for Olive. It all just feels a little early to move her out of the NICU and honestly I feel like maybe they are just tired of all of our questions and spending so much time visiting Olive. She has though, been much more stable lately. Its days like today when my homesickness creeps up and for a minute all I want is to be home in my own culture.

When we told the doctor we would like to stay in the NICU for now she said that would be ok...for now. She did say that if the NICU gets crowded with new cases that we will have to move out for the risk of infection.

Just wanted to post a reminder that you are being prayed for! Also, I can only imagine your homesickness but don't forget: we have residents, new nurses, and not sympathetic nurses here too at times. I have no doubt you will feel more comfortable in the States in a system you understand better but we have issues here too. As a nurse, I don't want to scare you, just remind you. It is wonderful to know that God is in control in all cultures and situations. I think you did a wonderful job of explaining that in your other post. Praying for you as more opportunities arise.

Life is messy, it has been from the time Adam and Eve had to leave Eden. Sin has permeated life and that will not end until Christ returns. So we live out our trials among others who are also suffering. It is the assurance that no matter what happens we belong to God and he is there in the midst of the pain and tears, the numbness and the total weariness. Even as he suffered emotionally and physically, Christ was always aware of those around him. So we strive with the help of the Holy Spirit to live as he did. But accept your humanity, your cries of WHY? He understands and even though you feel everything is out of control, you still know that he is in control. As you know, one of the hardest things for me is to hand it all over to him without the need to understand why he isn't doing something. To simply say, "do with me what you will" We continue to pray for a medical flight out, we pray that Olive can stay in the ICU, we pray for complete healing, for strength for the both of you to handle each day at a time. We bless him in ways that you are glorifying him even when you are unaware how many lives have been touched. Praying for his peace and mercy.

If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.
He sends you flowers every spring, and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen.
He could live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.
What about the Christmas gift He sent you in Bethlehem ;
not to mention that Friday at Calvary .
Face it, He's crazy about you.

God has a picture of your family and is so proud of it. Praying for you. Fern Bontrager

I am a George MacDonald fan. Here is a poem of his I have posted beside my bed..."Sometimes I awake, and lo, I have forgot, and drifted out upon an ebbing sea! My soul that was at rest now resteth not, For I am with myself and not with thee; Truth seems a blind moon in a glaring morn, Where nothing is but a sick-hearted vanity: Oh, thou who knowest, save they child forlorn." May you know His rest amidst all the unrest and questions around you!

Definitely agree with Stacie@HobbitDoor. You have to accept whatever God give to you in all situations. Just to remind you that our lives are in the hands of God. Therefore, accept whatever you have and whatever it is presently if your faith in God is still strong and firm. Be calm and have peace of mind and God will be with you.

Merry Christmas, and know you are in God's hands. Olive looks adorable, as usual.
